STYLE AND CREATIVE APPROACH
The visual and audio
stylings of this film are going to be driving forces. I wanted to come
up with a way to make this film cool and timeless. The flowing is how
I plan to achieve this:
VISUAL
As a student with a
focus in cinematography, I plan to accomplish a lot visually. I have
decided on using three different visual styles to represent different
elements within the film and delineate clearly between jumps in time.
Everything that takes place within the present time frame of the film
will be filmed in color while the flashback portions and montage elements
will be filmed in black and white. I have made this aesthetic decision
for an important reason; I want to make this film appear timeless, and
I feel that I can be more manipulative and accomplish this goal more
precisely with the use of black and white. I plan on using a combination
ofnatural lighting and dramatic lighting to create a mood and ultimately
a sense of suspended reality.
Also, I think that having these flashback elements in black and white
gives them added romanticism, which is important because Nola is recounting
these events to her friends and is obviously infatuated but still views
true love like it is in all the old movies. There’s even a shot
I have scripted that is only shadows, and suggest a kiss happening between
Nola and Traveler. I think that this is also important because this
story after all is being told from the perspective of a young inexperienced
woman who’s high on endorphins for the first half of the film.
Within the story, there will be a segment in bold color to represent
Nola’s bothered state. This will be a montage that will occur
after her and Traveler have had relations, and will consist of a series
of mannequins with different “pubic stylings.” These will
likely be shot with the HVX 200 after principle photography is completed.
I plan on using brightly colored lights in primarily reds, yellows and
blues, and it will be done in a small controlled setting, likely in
front of a plain backdrop painted with light. For the portion of the
film that’s to be shot in color, I will be using a warm color
scheme, emphasizing the colors red, orange and yellow-orange and using
blue-green
to contrast certain elements within each scene.
As for basic wardrobe, I want to avoid items that are trendy or significant
to the time. I want this film to be just as applicable ten years from
now as it is today.
AUDITORY
I want this film to seem
worldly even though it takes place locally. I have selected a soundtrack
of mostly ‘60s and ‘70s Brazilian music to be used and/or
copied as needed. The music will be additive to the pacing of the film
while providing significant dramatic cues, especially for the insert
scene with the mannequins because it’s so outrageous in nature
it needs to stand out from the rest of the film.
